In the Beginning:

Heather Watson was born in California, raised and educated in Scotland UK, and at the young age of 19 she returned to the United States. Being the "land of opportunity" she decided to "shoot for the moon" and applied to a job posting for a Controller of a well-established construction company. Much to her surprise, she was interviewed and hired on the 4th of July, just two days after arriving.

She wasn't thrown, Heather had jumped on a ship without power and without a rudder, and it was sinking fast. The companies key financial controls were virtually non-existent. Determined to not go down with the ship, she paddled fast and hard, creating, planning, implementing and streamlining processes. By establishing some simple structures and getting an overview of the company, Heather was able to turn this company into a healthy and profitable business. On this voyage Heather acquired much knowledge but the most important lesson learned was:

At the age of 21, Heather decided it was time to take the leap into entrepreneurship, after all, look at what she had accomplished there was nothing she couldn't do! British Heritage Imports - specialty store was born. Entering into a partnership, leasing space, trips to the UK, purchase orders placed, store stocked, open the doors and they will come.

They came and they went - partnership gone bad, too large of a space, not enough inventory, empty shelves. Faced with a new lease, reality set in, it was time to close the doors and let this ship sink. Valuable lessons were learned on this one year venture, many mistakes were made: including failing to plan, meant she had planned to fail. However, the biggest insight of all was:

The Growing Years:

With a bruised ego; but her determination and drive still intact, Heather's journey took her to Washington state where she was recruited as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of a start-up high-tech internet recruiting company during the dot-com bubble. The dot-com boom, fueled by great enthusiasm for new opportunities that the World Wide Web presented, took off fast and furiously; however, the laws could not keep pace. Heather stumbled upon a "loop-hole" that had a significant impact to the bottom-line of all recruiting companies. With this knowledge, and a plan, she created her own consulting firm.

Sought after by many recruiting firms, her consulting business was thriving. Then, the inevitable happened. The dot-com bubble, burst. What happened ? You may ask. Well, she had taken the lessons learned from her past and had applied them in her plan. Forseeing, that her consulting, in a specific niche market, would come to a screeching halt, at some point in time, she had planned her strategy to grow the business by incorporating accounting & bookeeping services. There were challenges and struggles along the way, but the business was a success and flourished.

You may have noticed, that so far emphasis has been put on the importance of planning. A business plan, is an essential roadmap for business success. A compass, pointing you in the right direction, outlining a path, mapping your progress to reaching your destination. A living document, forever changing on your journey to success.

Starting Over:

However, sometimes life events happen that no amount of planning can prepare you for. Like a natural disaster or loss of a loved one. Heather lost her soulmate suddenly to cancer. Her world was turned upside down. Tough decisions had to be made. One of which was to move closer to family and friends. This required her to sell a large portion of her business that relied on the hands-on approach. So with a deep breath, and yes - a plan, Heather set out on her journey; destination - Port Orange, Florida.
